ANNOUNCEMENT !

The Hwa Chong Choir (rioHC!) took part in the bi-annual World Choir Games (WCG) organised by Musica Mundi. Held in Graz, Austria, rioHC! bagged 2 Golds in the Folklore and Mixed Choirs Category. On top of that, rioHC! became the category CHAMPION for the Mixed Choir, with an incredible score of 93.5. We beat the choir that came in second by a whopping 10 points. It's crazy.

Just to give you an idea of why being a champion in the WCG is so crazy, here's a little history about the WCG.

The First International Choir Competition of Budapest, which was launched exactly twenty years ago, was the start of one of the largest and most successful series of cultural events in Europe. The name of these novel choir competitions and festivals, MUSICA MUNDI, has meanwhile become known throughout the world for its high artistic and organisational standards and has become a concept for the choir-orientated public, with enthusiastic followers all over the world. The organisation was originally set up by its founders in 1988 to intensify cultural exchange between Eastern and Western Europe. Since the end of the Cold War, it has in the years after the fall of the walls between the two social systems turned into one of the most successful movements on the international choir and music scene. MUSICA MUNDI competitions grew in stature and profile and developed into truly enthusiastic meetings of choirs and orchestras from all over the world.

These events are organised by the non-profit organisation INTERKULTUR Foundation. The Foundation’s biggest success so far, was to bring the ancient Olympic idea to the choral world. The Choir Olympics 2000 in Linz (Austria) were the start of a Choir Olympic movement, a success story which continued in 2002 in Busan (Korea), 2004 in Bremen (Germany) and 2006 with the World Choir Games in Xiamen (China) and is unique on the international choral scene. That INTERKULTUR gives choirs from all over the world an opportunity to meet and compete in peace and harmony under the motto "Culture creates tolerance – using culture to spread peace"
There are various categories for all choir types and choir levels in different degrees of difficulty, with and without compulsory pieces. They offer a unique atmosphere, good competitive conditions, intensive artistic contacts, various consultation programmes and workshops, as well as practice opportunities with international performers. More than 400 experts and leading choirmasters from all over the world guarantee a high level of qualified competence in all MUSICA MUNDI events. In total, nearly 5,000 choirs with 220,000 active singers from 90 countries have taken part in the MUSICA MUNDI competitions to date. It is interesting to note that over half of the participants have been children and young people under the age of 25.

5th WORLD CHOIR GAMES GRAZ 2008

The 5th World Choir Games in Graz 2008 are well on the way to becoming the largest competition in the history of choir music. Until now about 441 ensembles from 93 nations have registered already. The large number of participating choirs is complemented by folk dance groups and brass music bands which are going to turn this event into a unique festival of different cultures.
According to the status quo China, Russia, Austria and Germany are going to delegate most of the participating choirs - more than 170 of them altogether, followed closely by Indonesia, Hungary and Croatia which will be present with nearly 90 choirs. This shows that our slogan "Singing together brings nations together" will be celebrated impressively in Graz in July.

The choirs are going to demonstrate their abilities to the approximately 71 international jurors in more than 600 performances in 28 different categories. More than 1.000 concerts in Graz and vicinity will take place, including friendship-, gala- and special-concerts. Two-thirds of the participants at this event again are going to be children, teenager and young adults. Over 140 performances in categories concerning children and youth choirs reflect this fact. But also the categories Folklore, Musica Sacra, Popular Choir Music as well as Gospel and Spiritual enjoy great popularity so that we are looking forward to another 220 performances.

And anyway, this is the first time any Singapore choir ever won category champion in any category. Hwa Chong's world rankings aren't that good (~200 plus) compared to VJC, Victoria Chorale and Anderson JC, but we really shone in WCG 2008. There were a total of 28 categories. We competed in two and bagged golds for both AND category champion. Please tell me that's imba.

Maybe others don't know what we've achieved. But I just want to say that I'm really proud of and glad for being a part of Hwa Chong Choir. Really proud. I love all of you.
Let your eyes be drawn to these picture mementos of our wonderful journey in Graz...

Firstly, pictures from the Musica Mundi, the organiser of WCG

Banner of the WCG

Günter Titsch, President of the WCG 2008

Tolling of the bell to mark the official opening and closing of the WCG.

Different countries and their flags waving proudly on stage. I think the Singapore flag is the red and white one at the extreme left.

Ms Lim's conductor friend, who is also the pro conductor of the top choir in the world, apparently. We saw him in real life at Stadthalle, one of our competition venues. He's quite hot. Haha.

Now for some of my own photos...

Vienna Aiport. I thought this sign was quite cool. Heh.

Travelling on the bus, on the way to Graz. The raindrops made the scenery look pretty.

The streets of Graz. Quaint and unassuming.

I like this picture.

Us at Stadthalle, the venue of the Category 8: Mixed Choir competition.

Ate lunch here. There are really nice waiters in Graz :)

A church-like building next to the stage at which we were supposed to perform for the Friendship Concert but didn't. Because we were "tired". Haha. Inside joke.

My camera doesn't do the interior of the University of Graz justice. It was the second competition venue, for Category 27: Folklore.

The equally stunning exterior.

Reshma & I

The opening ceremony of the WCG, aka Choral Fireworks, held in Stadthalle. Hewlett is proudly waving the Singapore flag in the foreground. The sheer size of the hall is mindblowing. It's so huge choirs need mikes to be able to project their sound to the back of the hall.

Look at the many pretty flags lining the walls! Can you spot our flag? Quite hard though; the crescent and stars appear as a white blur.

Choral Fireworks.

Random pretty sunflowers picture!

Okay now a major skip, because we were too busy practising and we couldn't bring cameras and valuables to our competition venues.

WHOO~ TWO GOLDS AND ONE CATEGORY CHAMP :))

Some of us posing after our double win and performance at the Champions Concert.

Me and Liying! :D

Dang, you can't see my legs. But it was a sexy pose. Haha.

Me camwhoring with make up on after the Champions Concert. My mom and bro both say I look malay/like a ballerina.

The Vienna Opera house. Beautiful, isn't it? There are statues under each of the second level arches. But you can't seem them 'cos they're black and blend in with the shadows.

One lone horseman.

The grand entrance.

They have lovely statues. But you have to be there to appreciate them. Partly because of the lousy photo quality :/

I just love the carved ceilings.

Okay here's a lovely photo of the huge chandelier which uses 3000 bulbs, hanging above the stage.

Here's a random room filled with chandeliers. Pretty pretty!

Haha. This room was filled with busts of famous composers. I tried taking pictures of Beethoven, Handel and Chopin, but the lighting was bad. Wagner turned out really nice, though. Heh.

This palace is supposed to be significant... but I don't recall what the significance was. Oops. Haha.

Statue in front of parliament house

Crazy Long Limo.

And that's it! I don't have the other photos as 1) there are weird ghost photos in my camera which restrict the number of photos I can take to 60. 2) Other people took more photos of people. I took more scenery photos. Yay. Pity I don't have any photos of the gorgeous Schonburg Palace (where Maria Theresa, Marie Antoinette's mother used to live). Phototaking was prohibited inside the palace. But trust me, the palace is really amazing. Hm! I wish I could live there for a week. A year would be too long. But then again, all that walking from one end to the other would be sufficient exercise.

Okay. Now for some of Zhongwei's photos of us after we landed in Singapore on the 22rd July, 5.35pm.

Ms Lim, the proud owner of the gold medal and the plaque.

Our wonderful teachers in charge, who made this trip possible! Excludes lady on the extreme left, whom I think is an alumnus.

Us being funny. Hahaha.

Sopranos whooshhh!

All of us, Singapore flag and all.

HC CHOIR FOREVER !
