Sarah Brightman - Pie jesu - live in 1985 New York
Hmm i love her voice - then. It's not that I don't appreciate the fact that singers' voices do change when they grow older and usually become fuller and darker with more vibrato. But oh the innocence Sarah's young voice embodies! This rendition of Pie Jesu touches me more than versions with a darker/fuller/more vibrato sound. Sorry Sissel, Cecilia Bartoli and (the current) Sarah! You ladies sound brilliant too, but I'm inclined to prefer a purer voice for this song, considering its nature and meaning. Oh Celtic Women are pretty good, but they don't sing the vowels cleanly enough and have too much of a modern accent on consonants. Hayley Westerna's tone colour is good but she sounded too thin? nasal? for my liking. Charlotte Church sounds too... nice. Hoho call me biased but Sarah wins hands down for this song. Oh and the little boy sounds so sweet too :) He's one of the better treble singers who've sung Pie Jesu with Sarah, at any rate.
